The purpose of this Webinar is to provide participants with a brief overview of medications that have been shown to be effective as a component of the treatment of alcohol and opioid addiction. Topics will include: the context for medication-assisted treatment (positive and negative perceptions), the epidemiology and user demographics of the alcohol and opioid problem, a review of alcohol and the various classes of opioids, an overview of each medication, its indication, to whom it is administered, and how it works, and treatment settings for medication-assisted treatment. Medications will include: acamprosate, naltrexone, methadone, and buprenorphine. Time will be provided for discussion and questions. At the end of the MAT Webinar, participants will be able to: Describe at least three (3) acute and chronic effects of alcohol and opioids. Describe the prevalence of and key populations impacted by alcohol and opioid use, abuse, and dependence. Provide examples of at least three (3) medications that are available to treat alcohol and opioid addiction.
