This workshop will offer tools to help behavioral health providers implement best practices in engaging and treating individuals from the LGBTQI community. At the conclusion of the workshop the participants will: · Become familiar with common terms and learn tips on how to approach vulnerable topics (sex, spirituality/religion, relationships, gender transition, and more) · Understand why our sensitivity matters, and the "how" of being sensitive - including how repair our inevitable mis-steps · Review techniques to help clients who are struggling with internalized homophobia and shame; including how to identify "health" and how to encourage clients to move toward health · Understand the basics of diversity, privilege, and discrimination, including the latest research about how gay, lesbian, transgender clients see heterosexual and cisgender counselors, and how we can reduce the most common barriers · Learn the basics of co-occurring treatment - in particular for gender dysphoria and substance use concerns
