With the opioid epidemic, there is a general acceptance in our country for the need to more fully address substance use in a comprehensive practice. There is also a need to identify substance use earlier as a prevention measure. This session will introduce participants to the evidence based services of SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment), with a focus on screens for substance use incorporating the DAST screening tool. Stigma and awareness will also be addressed as it relates to how effective these services will be. The session will also cover how to implement SBIRT into a more integrated approach to care. In addition we will discuss potential barriers to screening and intervention and established strategies to address them.
Objectives:
- Learn foundational knowledge on core aspects essential to SBIRT.
- Be able to cite how stigma and agency culture can affect the effectiveness of SBIRT services in a setting.
- Identify elements of the DAST screening tool for use in general populations to assess for substance use risk levels.
- Understand and utilize a warm handoff to facilitate referrals for high risk substance use behavior.
- Identify at least two implementation strategies towards integration of SBIRT into current services.
- Identify two issues that can be addressed to increase sustainability of SBIRT in a new setting.
