The digital landscape has changed dramatically in the past 20 years. From the advent of email to the proliferation of social media and anonymous rant sites, identifying which platforms will be advantageous for increasing student engagement can be overwhelming. For example, the much-maligned app Yik-Yak has been criticized as a source of anonymous hate, but has the potential to reach vulnerable students, raise awareness about campus resources, and be a channel for anonymous positivity. The University of Texas at Austin has had success with an internal email listserv, a private Facebook group, a public-facing Facebook page, and text messaging, but has not successfully engaged students via GroupMe or Twitter. The University of North Texas, in contrast, has had great success with student engagement via GroupMe, Twitter, and CyberDust as well as more traditional digital platforms. There are also dozens of recovery-oriented mobile apps currently available or in development. As the social media, mobile app and school-specific digital landscape continues to evolve, collegiate recovery professionals must adapt to meet students in recovery wherever they gather and engage online.
