Objectives: At the end of this workshop participants will be able to: Identify SBIRT as a system change initiative; Compare and contrast the current system with SBIRT; Understand the public health approach; Discuss the need to change how we think about substance use behaviors, problems, and interventions; Understand the information screening does and does not provide; Define brief intervention/brief negotiated interview; Describe the goals of conducting a BI/BNI; Understand the counselor’s role in providing BI/BNI; Develop knowledge of Motivational Interviewing as it relates to the SBIRT model; and Describe referral to treatment.
